Missing Live Music: Highlighting those Memorable Shows

Since I have been missing live music as of lately, I spent some time revisiting some videos that I have taken at several shows that I’ve attended. While I photograph a lot of shows, I don’t always remember to take videos. Recently, I have been trying to capture one or two songs from the shows that I attend. After spending some time on my YouTube channel (and Facebook) today, I compiled a few concert memories that I wanted to share!

Angels and Airwaves
The Fillmore on 9-13-19

Prior to this show, the last time I saw Angels and Airwaves was at Rams Head Live in 2009 (or 2010, I can’t remember). I was really looking forward to this show last year at The Fillmore Silver Spring. Tom DeLonge performed a melody of Blink 182’s “I Miss You” followed by “There Is” by Box Car Racer, and ending with “Alien’s Exist” by Blink 182. The best part of this moment was hearing the entire sold out venue sing along. This was also a few days before my birthday and I went along with my daughter who was essentially raised on Tom DeLonge’s voice, so it was extra special!

The Killers
The Anthem on 1-10-18

Despite being a fan of The Killers since their beginnings, this was my first time seeing them perform live. I wasn’t able to photograph this one, but I wasn’t too upset about it. I went with a good friend who is also a huge Killers fan and I thoroughly enjoyed the show. During their hit song, “All These Things That I’ve Done”, they blasted confetti during the climax of the song and it was pretty awesome. Every time I hear that song now, I think of this moment! Can’t wait to see them again soon!

The Front Bottoms
The Anthem on 11-24-18

I have seen The Front Bottoms several times. This was their first show at The Anthem and the first show that both my kids came along with me. My son was 14 at the time and it was his first D.C. concert! Watching this performance of “Twin Mattress” from the back of the venue was perfection! Everyone’s hands in the air and singing along…. this is one example of why I love live music so much!

The Front Bottoms
The Fillmore on 11-24-17

This was my first time seeing The Front Bottoms. They were touring in support of their 6th studio album, Going Grey. This song, “The Plan” is one of my favorite songs, and the best part is watching this sold out crowd sing along!

Marco Benevento
The 8 x 10 on 06-14-18

I went to see Marco Benevento with a friend who invited me to go along with him. I knew nothing of his music or anything about him as a musician. This show was one of my top shows of 2018 and I became an instant fan of Marco Benevento and his guitarist, Karina Rykman. There was so much energy in the room during this show. My favorite part was when they covered Butthole Surfers’ hit, “Pepper”.

My Morning Jacket
Merriweather Post Pavilion on 7-15-17

I didn’t photograph this show but went with friends. The last time I saw My Morning Jacket perform, it was in 2008 at DAR Constitution Hall so I was really excited for this show. It was a hot July night but this performance was incredible! I was happy to hear one of my favorite songs by them, “Off the Record”.

Weezer
Jiffy Lube on 6-22-18

I have been a fan of Weezer since the 90s but this was my first time seeing them perform live. (Don’t ask me why). I had so much fun at this show. They performed every song that a Weezer fan would want to hear. The best part was when Rivers Como went out to the back of the pavilion to perform Island in the Sun for the lawn. After the first verse, he asked everyone bring out their lights and within seconds, the entire pavilion and lawn was glowing! It was a really cool moment!

The Cure
Hyde Park on 7-7-18

My love for The Cure goes back to when I was 15. I have seen this band on every tour since Disintegration (but one, which I missed to give birth to my daughter in 2000) and have seen them in 6 different states and 3 different countries. It only seemed appropriate that I would make my way back to London to see them for their 40th Anniversary show at Hyde Park. What made this so special was attending this concert with a friend that I have known for the entire time that I have loved this band. We had a great weekend in London and this show was definitely one of the best performances I have ever seen. I didn’t photograph this one since I have photographed The Cure many times. It was nice to sit this one out!

The Interrupters
Merriweather Post Pavilion on 7-27-19

Summers at Merriweather Post Pavilion are the best and this show was a prime example as to why! The Interrupters were opening for 311 and Dirty Heads, along with Dreamers and this line up was so amazing! Their performance of their hit, “She’s Kerosene” got the crowd going! Can’t wait to see them again! Check out their show review by Shawn Breen here.

The Foo Fighters
Glasgow Summer Sessions 7-17-19

This was an incredible weekend for me. Not only did I get to see The Cure, Mogwai, The Twilight Sad, and The Joy Formidable the day before… I got to follow that up with my first Foo Fighters concert… in Scotland! I did not photograph either of these concerts. I went solely to enjoy the shows. It was a bit rainy and muddy throughout the weekend, but pretty much dry for both shows. This video captures a perfect moment during this amazing weekend, as the crowd sings along with Dave Grohl, “There goes my hero, watch him as he goes.”

Interpol
Merriweather Post Pavilion on 9-5-19

I love this band. Every time I see them perform live, I am amazed. This was my fourth time seeing Interpol. For this particular show, they were opening for Morrissey. I loved their performance so much that I left afterwards. In truth, I was really only there to see them, and to be honest, Morrissey wouldn’t have topped this performance for me. Here is a beautiful version of “NYC” – “New York Cares”.

Dreamers
Union Stage on 11-7-19

A friend who lives in California is always sending me new music. He sent me a song from these guys a few years ago and I liked them instantly. I try to catch their live shows anytime they come to town. I have so much fun at every one of their shows. I’ve covered a few of their shows on the blog including this recent performance at Union Stage. They covered Radiohead’s “Karma Police” perfectly!

Matt and Kim
Rams Head Live on 11-23-19

I am missing the energy that live music brings. This show is a perfect example of contagious energy! Matt and Kim kept the crowd moving at Rams Head Live the entire night! It was so much fun!

New Order
The Anthem on 8-28-18

This show was pure joy. After so many years, this band can still put on an amazing show. The first time I saw New Order was in 1993 at Merriweather Post Pavilion. This was only my second time seeing them live and this performances ended up being one of my top for 2018. I was so happy to hear one of my favorite songs by New Order, “Your Silent Face” from their second album, Power, Corruption & Lies.

Explosions in the Sky
Rams Head Live – 4-19-17

This show took place during a very difficult time in my life. I didn’t photograph this show and almost didn’t even make it that night. However, a friend came through at the last minute and I ended up going. This was my first show that I had attended in several months and this show made me realize how much I truly needed live music in my life. It was at this moment that I decided to get back into going to shows more regularly after some time off. Here is Explosions in the Sky performing their beautiful song, “My Hand in Yours”.

Fleet Foxes
The Anthem on 5-18-18

Almost 10 years prior to this show, I saw Fleet Foxes for the first time. We were on vacation in San Francisco and Shawn said we had to check out this new band who was playing at a small little club, Bottom of the Hill. This was also the year that I started photographing shows, so seeing them at the beginning and end of my 10 year anniversary was pretty special! Here is a picture from the first show on July 27, 2008 (including my old watermark!) and the video of “My Protector” from their performance at The Anthem on May 18, 2018.

The Joy Formidable
ANY show with The Joy Formidable!

Second to The Cure, The Joy Formidable fall right up there at the top of my list of favorite bands to see live. After seeing them perform live at the back room of the Black Cat in 2010, I was hooked. I’ve photographed several of their shows and have highlighted them on the blog a few times. Definitely check these guys out if you are unfamiliar and don’t miss an opportunity to see them perform live! Here’s a flash back to their second performance at the Black Cat in 2011.
