CHUCK IS BACK! moe. AT THE 9:30 CLUB

14 months and 23 shows. That’s what has passed since Chuck Garvey suffered a stroke. Fans of moe. weren’t sure if they would see the guitarist and founding member join the band on stage ever again. It’s been a slow, arduous journey for Chuck, but he is back.

On NYE he joined his buddies on stage that the band last played before his stroke–Fillmore Philadelphia–and played just over half of the show. For all the moe.rons there could not have been a better way to welcome in 2023.

Friday night in DC, Chuck played his second full show since that night, and it was clear the people in attendance were ecstatic to see him back on stage, and to hear the band the way it is supposed to be.  Throughout the show, “We love you Chuck!” and “Chuck, DC loves you!” were hurled towards the stage from throughout the packed 9:30 Club. One fan, on stage right was proudly sporting a Chuckside T-shirt.

It was also clear that Chuck’s bandmates were happy to have him back. At one point, bassist Rob Derhak turned to admire Chuck’s solo in the middle of Lazarus–slyly smiling while maintaining the groove and nonchalant cool that says to everyone watching that things are back to normal.

This was the third show of their 22 date tour this winter and early spring up and down the East Coast. You can also catch them at Summer Camp and with Umphrey’s McGee at Red Rocks June 16th and 17th.
