The Devil Makes Three at Rams Head Live in Baltimore

The Devil Makes Three performed at Rams Head Live this past Thursday and they rocked it. I have had the pleasure of seeing this band perform several times over the past 10 years after a friend shared their music with me. Although I have been a fan for such a length of time, the group of musicians have been making music for much longer, going back to the early 2000s.

This past summer, The Devil Makes Three performed at MECU Pavilion with Rancid and Pennywise – making for a rather interesting mix of genres for that evening’s concert. However, I believe that the band acquired a new set of fans that evening because they successfully had a pit full of punk rock fans dancing to their energetic bluegrass tunes. The Devil Makes Three has a way of bringing Ragtime and Bluegrass alive for a younger generation, and I think that is why I enjoy them so much.

At Rams Head last Thursday, the band took the stage to candlelight – creating a mood of anticipation. The kicked off their set singing full a capella, “What Would You Give (In Exchange for Your Soul)”, which was completely fitting for the setup on stage. It literally gave me chills. They took this song right into There’ll be a Jubilee” with full instruments, and the crowd went wild. It really was an awesome way to open the show.

The lighting added to the music as it changed throughout the songs, sometimes strobes lit up the stage, and other times up-lighting was used to cast eerie shadows on the ceiling of the venue. Their stage lighting was completely appropriate for the mood of their music.

A new member joins the band on stand up bass, Morgan Eve Swain, who replaced former longtime bassist, Lucia Turino. We had the pleasure of seeing Swain perform for the first time on stage with The Devil Makes Three this past summer at MECU Pavilion. Her smile and energy fits right in with the band and it is a pleasure to watch her perform!
