Weezer Delivers Some Surprises on St. Patrick’s Day

There is no doubt in my mind that Weezer could ever deliver a subpar performance.  Weezer played last summer at Jiffy Lube Pavilion and just over 6 months later, they returned to area to perform a St. Patrick’s Day show at Royal Farm Arena in Baltimore.

Just like this past summer, Weezer teamed up with Pixies to take their fans back to the 90’s in more ways than one.  Pixies kicked off the evening but could have easily been the headliner.  Their 23-song set contained a variety of fan favorites such as “Wave of Mutilation” and “Here Comes Your Man”.  However, the set also included some surprises.  Pixies performed an outstanding version of “Head On”, a cover of yet another 90’s music iconic band, The Jesus and Mary Chain.  They also covered Neil Young’s “Winterlong”.

Weezer took the stage in “barbershop quartet-style”, circling around the microphone to perform “Buddy Holly”. They exited the stage and re-entered to their classic “Happy Days” intro music. From there, they powered through “My Name is Jonas”, “The Good Life” and the traditional version of “Buddy Holly”.

Midway through their set, Weezer treated the audience to some unexpected cover songs.  Weezer has been credited with the resurgence in popularity of Toto’s “Africa”.  However, they have now taken on a few more covers which they performed at the show Sunday night.  Highlights included a surprisingly great version of TLC’s classic hit, “No Scrubs”, Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid” and “Up the Beach” by Jane’s Addiction.

In classic form, Weezer concluded their 22-song setlist with “Say It Ain’t So”.  This was definitely NOT a repeat of their show this past summer.  Weezer included several songs that would make any Weezer fan extremely happy but they also delivered some fun covers that made this night pretty memorable!  Enjoy these photos from Weezer performing at Royal Farms Arena on March 17, 2019.
