I was only just introduced to the LA-based band, The Wild Reeds, in January 2019, and I instantly swooned over their smooth, synchronistic voices. Their songwriting skills are brilliant, and the music accompanying them is gorgeous. Their songs have the ability to simultaneously fill you with both heartache and love.
The way Mackenzie, Sharon, and Kinsey sing with such alacrity is electrifying. They don’t have your typical singer-songwriter sound. Their musical elasticity was made apparent when their setlist switched between songs from their first album, “The World We Built” to songs from their newest album, “Cheers.”
While their first album has more of a singer-songwriter vibe, “Cheers” is more experimental, introducing us to some r&b-inspired folksy songs, such as, “Lose My Mind.” The Wild Reeds entranced the crowd at U Street Music Hall with the passion felt behind each song from the setlist.
Another LA-based band, Valley Queen, set the stage as the opening act. The lead vocalist, Natalie Carol, has a voice that is both powerful and fragile. She got the crowd pumped up for The Wild Reeds.
