So, Just Who IS “That 1 Guy”?

Oh the mystery that surrounds, “That 1 Guy“. Is this a band, a magician, or a puppeteer? Exactly what is that instrument this guy is playing? All these questions ran through my head last summer when I happened upon… you know, “That 1 Guy”.

I entered the Lincoln Theater just in time for the opening act. I was there to photograph The Eels and was very excited for this show. However, I did not have much knowledge of the performer who would kick off the evening. The stage was empty aside for a single, rather odd, looking instrument. The lights dimmed and one guy walked out onto the stage. His face was nearly hidden by the rather full beard and the shadows cast from his top hat. I had no idea what to expect. Then, he started to play his curious instrument and I was captivated.

So who exactly is “That 1 Guy”? Mike Silverman, that’s who; and he is quite an amazing artist. Silverman is classically trained on the double bass and his musical style grew out of the progressive jazz scene in the 90’s. He generates his sounds through a series of homemade instruments: The Magic Pipe, The Magic Boot, and The Magic Saw. Together, these instruments create the most unique sounds I have ever heard at a show. I could go into more detail about these instruments; however, this would ruin the experience of seeing him perform.

Mike Silverman, aka That 1 Guy, entertains an astonished crowd with an impromptu puppet show.

This Thursday night, That 1 Guy, will be stopping by The 8×10. Also, if magic is your thing, Silverman will be hosting a special VIP magic show, demonstrating his multiple talents. Don’t miss out on this exceptional night of music and fun! Tickets to the main show are only $15 and can be purchased here.
