Snoh Aalegra Delivers Violet Skies and an Exceptional Performance To The Anthem

Snoh Aalegra brought her Ugh, These Temporary Highs tour to DC’s The Anthem on 3.31.2022 and those in attendance were witness to an amazing performance by the Grammy nominated singer/songwriter and her highly skilled band. This was the seventh of 24 shows on the tour, which began a few weeks ago in Detroit and concludes in Portland in late May.

Aalegra, who now lives in Los Angeles, was raised in Sweden and is of Iranian descent. Her star has been rising steadily with the release of her last two albums, Ugh, Those Feels Again in 2019 and her latest, Temporary Highs In The Violet Skiesin 2021. She received two 2022 Grammy nominations: Her song ‘Lost You’ (from Temporary Highs In The Violet Skies) for Best R&B Performance and Temporary Highs In The Violet Skies for Best R&B Album. Both albums are excellent and illustrate her stellar vocals, creativity, and songwriting skills. The musicianship from her band and top-notch production makes Snoh’s music a must listen.

Snoh and her band performed for an hour and twenty minutes and the adrenaline and excitement permeated throughout the sellout crowd (estimated at close to six thousand). The Anthem was packed with fans standing shoulder to shoulder and it was extremely hot (more on that later).

The show started with Snoh and the band performing ‘Situationship’ from Ugh, Those Feels Again, followed up by ‘In Your Eyes’ from Temporary Highs In The Violet Skies and then ‘Whoa.’ All three tunes are mid-tempo with catchy choruses that the crowd was eager to sing along with her. Next up she performed the Grammy nominated single ‘Lost You’, which is about someone that breaks up with their partner but continues to see them because of the way that person makes them feel.

Snoh and the band continued through the set list, slowing things down with ‘We Don’t Have To Talk’, ‘On My Mind’‘You’‘Fool For You’ (from her first album Feels), ‘Everything’, and ‘Tangerine Dream’. She balanced those with more mid and up-tempo songs like ‘Toronto’, (which features exemplary drum work), ‘Dying For Your Love’, and ‘Neon Peach’‘In The Moment’. Snoh also covered Bobby Caldwell‘s timeless R&B classic, ‘What You Won’t Do For Love’

The last two songs Snoh performed before leaving the stage were ‘Violet Skies’ and the infectious ‘Nothing To Me’. She wrote Violet Skies to encourage her younger self and those in attendance to dismiss the naysayers and follow your dreams. The crowd stayed put and shouted their desire to hear more, so naturally Snoh obliged them and returned for the encore. She wrapped up the show with two love songs that the audience surely appreciated: ‘Find Someone Like You’ and ‘I Want You Around”.

Snoh delivered an incredible performance this night. The lighting for this show is incredible and helps set the mood Snoh wants to convey for each song. The only downside (certainly not any fault of her own), was that it was so hot inside The Anthem (in part due to the severe weather), three people fainted at various times during her performance. Once Snoh became aware, she stopped the show immediately (each time) and showed true compassion for those affected. The show lost some continuity, but Snoh (being a true professional) kept things moving nicely. If your city is on Snoh’s tour list, you owe it to yourself to purchase a ticket!
