Shakey Graves Brings his Blues, Folk, and Rock and Roll to The Anthem

Shakey Graves and Dr. Dog have joined forces for an 18-show co-headlining tour.  What better combination could you ask for?  Both bands performed this past weekend at The Anthem and the entire show rocked from start to finish.  Dr. Dog opened for the D.C. show (you can read their show review, here) and Shakey Graves closed the night out with a powerful 10-song set.

The performance started with the slow building song, “Word of Mouth”, a perfect example of Shakey Graves’ origins as a solo artist when he used to perform entirely with only his guitar and suitcase foot drum.  Then, he rolled into the three-quarter timed, “Pansy Waltz” from the 2014 album, And the War Came. After a few songs performing solo, his band joined him on stage and things started to rock.

Despite having a new album out, Shakey Graves only performed one song from his latest release, Can’t Wake Up, and it was the first song on the set to pull in the faster timed rhythms. After a slow start, “Cops and Robbers” just seemed explode from the stage.  The energy continued through the middle of the set with “Dearly Departed”, “Perfect Parts”, and “Proper Fence”.  If you weren’t impressed by Shakey Graves up to this point, you most definitely were, especially after the emotionally-fired delivery of “Perfect Parts”.

Graves rounded out the set with two solo-styled songs, “Hard Wired” and “Late July”.  Although “Late July” started off slowly, it exploded at the end with those guitars that only Shakey Graves can deliver.  And with that, the show was over.  This was an amazing performance and the perfect way to end this evening of great music! It has been an honor seeing Shakey Graves go from his humble beginnings as a solo performer to rocking out the stage of The Anthem.
