Legendary R&B and neo-soul artist Maxwell has been very busy touring this year, much to the delight of his passionate and loyal fan base, many of whom go back to when he first took the music world by storm in 1996. He began earlier this year with a 25 city tour entitled “The Night Tour”, in which he featured fellow R&B/Soul artists Anthony Hamilton and Joe.
The tour was so successful he decided to add Part 2, and he engaged emerging female vocalist Ms. Alex Isley to open for him on his three DC/Baltimore metro area dates, which included one show at the CFG Bank Arena and back to back shows at the Theater at MGM National Harbor.
Haxwell is building momentum as it gets closer to the release of his sixth studio album, entitled blacksummers’NIGHT. This album will complete the trilogy that started in 2009 with BLACKsummers’night and continued with the second installment in 2016 (blackSUMMERS’night).
Maxwell wore a black, double breasted suit with gold brass buttons and his hair in cornrows (accentuated by a black headband) as he hit the stage. The crowd was ecstatic, especially his female fans as he started things off with one of his mid-tempo signature cuts, Sumthin’ Sumthin’ from his legendary debut album Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite. He sang Dancewitme from that same album before transitioning into the sultry ballad “Lifetime”, from his third album Now. The sold out crowd was feeling every minute of it as many rushed near the stage to dance and get their collective grooves on.
Part 2 of “The Night Tour” concludes in Philadelphia and Atlanta in December. Maxwell can still bring it vocally, and his timeless, smooth vocals are still intact. His band is top notch as well, with Latina Webb supporting Maxwell with some very solid background vocals. If you plan to attend one of his remaining tour dates, expect to hear classics such as Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder), Fortunate, Bad Habits, Pretty Wings, Lake By The Ocean and Whenever, Wherever, Whatever.
