Get to Know Shannon Gillen

My love for concert photography began when I lived in Charlottesville in 2013, and a friend’s band asked me to take their promo photos for an upcoming concert at The Southern Cafe and Music Hall. After that, folks from The Jefferson Theater and The Southern asked me to take concert photos for those venues. I had only just bought my first camera a few months prior, and was learning as I went while I shot bands like Deer Tick, Trampled by Turtles, Parachute, Leftover Salmon, and Real Estate, to name a few of my first gigs.

I moved to Glasgow, Scotland for my graduate degree in 2014, and started shooting for Sofar Sounds in Glasgow and Edinburgh. When I moved back to the States, I was a house photographer for The Orange Peel in Asheville, NC, and had the opportunity to shoot Lauryn Hill, Shovels and Rope, Keller Williams, Mipso, and The Infamous Stringdusters, to name a few favorites.

I moved to DC in 2018, and I’m excited to be shooting for IMP venues, and for These Subtle Sounds. I’ve loved having the opportunities to shoot some of my favorite artists such as Lizzo, Brandi Carlile, Lucius, The Suffers, Courtney Barnett, The National, and The Wood Brothers. Some other favorite bands that I’d love to have the opportunity to shoot are Lake Street Dive, St. Paul and the Broken Bones, Leon Bridges, Beck, Jenny Lewis, and Nathaniel Rateliff and the Nightsweats.

I love living in a city that brings in such good music, and has such a friendly photography community!
