Today in Music History: The Beatles Performed “Let it Be” on the Rooftop

I was late to the party, when I truly discovered The Beatles. I was a Rolling Stones guy. However, in my early twenties I met a girl who changed my perspective on life, as well as The Beatles. Driving in her red Chrysler, we had the discussion that could end relationships. Who is better, The Beatles or The Stones? My opinion was firm. You can’t beat Exile on Main Street with those hard-hitting dirty blues from Mick and Keith. To me, it was the best!

For her, the answer to this argument was to just play Sgt. Peppers… a lot! When I heard, “A Day in the Life” I was blown away. I thought to myself, “Wow. This is a strong song.” However, being an arrogant twenty-some year old at the time, I did not want to admit she was right about how great The Beatles really were.

The more I explored their music, the more I wanted. Then I came across, “Let it Be”, and I was again reflecting, “Oh man, this is excellent stuff”. Although, it was the song, “I Got a Feeling” that really affected me. Hearing that song hit me hard – like driving a car into a wall. From then on, I was a fan.

50 Years ago, The Beatles performed their last show on the rooftop! I can never get enough of watching this video. Peter Jackson is rumored to be making a documentary on this moment in time. We can only hope. As for the girl who won the argument, I just have to say, “Thank you for listening to Sgt. Peppers so much! You were right, just don’t tell anyone.”
