It has been three years since Metric last performed as a headliner. The last time Metric performed at the Fillmore Silver Spring, it was March of 2016 for the “I Can See the End” tour. However, during this time, Metric has been the supporting act for some pretty impressive bands. Last year, they opened for The Smashing Pumpkins and in 2015 they supported Imagine Dragons.
Whether delivering a performance as an opening band or a headlining act, Emily Haines and Metric always ignite a powerful energy on stage. And this past Friday at the Fillmore was no exception. Metric has been touring in support of the most recent album, Art of Doubt which was released September of 2018. This is the band’s first album since 2015’s Pagans in Vegas. Although Metric released their fist album in 2003, the band is most known for back to back albums, Fantasies in 2009 followed by Synthetica in 2012.
Art of Doubt delivers the sounds that Metric fans have grown to love and the show this past Friday was definitely a show for the fans. To kick off their set, they opened with their current single and fan appreciation song, “Love you Back”. The first half of their set highlighted the new album. They performed 6 songs off the Art of Doubt then used the rest of the time to play those songs that everyone loves. Among them were “Gimme Sympathy” and “Sick Muse” but the band also threw in a few surprises such as the dreamy melody, “Twilight Galaxy”.
The band wrapped up their 16-song set with “Gold Gun Girls”. Then they performed a three-song encore, adding two more songs from the new album to the setlist. Finally, they closed the night with the crowd sing-along “Help I’m Alive”. Metric is just at the beginning of their 27-city tour. If you missed the show last Friday or live near the Richmond, Virginia area, you can see them at The National of February 21.
