Iron & Wine and Clexico are always what I put on when I need to be reminded to breathe. They’ve always had a delicate, soothing sound, and their new album is no different. Sam Beam, whose stage name is Iron & Wine, has the most comforting voice and beautiful lyrics that will ease your soul after hearing just a few words. He teamed up with Calexico, a band whose sound is comprised of mariachi, folky, and jazzy sounds, to create their most recent album since 2005, “Years to Burn.” This album is made up of both uplifting and darker tunes.
Sam Beam poured out his deep lyrics in a sweet, whispery voice last Friday night during the seated show at The Anthem. Gathering all fans of all ages, Iron & Wine and Calexico played mostly songs from their newest album, along with crowd-pleasing favorites, such as Boy with a Coin, Naked as we Came, and History of Lovers. I remember tearing up the first time I saw this video of Boy with a Coin, and watching it over and over again as my skin was covered in goosebumps. In the video, you’ll see gorgeous flamenco dancing in perfect rhythm to the complicated sounds coming from a wide array of instruments enveloped in this song. Check out Iron & Wine and Calexico’s new album – you won’t be disappointed! Here’s one of my favorites, Father Mountain.
