Dr Dog always put on a great show, and at The Anthem Friday night the Philadelphia-based band rocked DC on their tour with Texas songsmith Shakey Graves.
The band, which is co-led by Toby Leaman (bass/vocals) and Scott McMicken (guitar/vocals) who share songwriting duties, has been putting out one brilliant record after another. I remember putting songs from We All Belong and Fate on mix tapes for friends years ago, and with newer technology I find myself still passing along recommendations – finding brilliant grooves on each successive album.
Dr Dog took the stage to the a packed Anthem and broke into their set with a string of favorites like “Ain’t It Strange,” “The Heart It Races,” and a rockin’ version of “Nellie.” Dr Dog can play some of the smoothest, laid back songs (The Breeze) and then switch to some of the catchiest funky lines you’ve ever heard (That Old Black Hole, How Long Must I Wait) to songs that just make you wanna get up and move (Go Out Fighting), and it was a thrill to see such a huge reaction.
Like any great show, there’s a sense of validation to see others around you grooving to songs you find yourself singing in the car, the shower, or sometimes just in your own head. And it’s even more heart-warming to see the band getting so much out of performing too as Scott and Toby played off each other and with fellow bandmates, Zach Miller (keys), Eric Slick (drums), and Frank McElroy (guitar/vocals) – along with a mysterious jug labeled “Stage Milk!”
The band rounded out their set with an explosive version of “Lonesome” (if you haven’t experienced them live, this is the song that’ll win you over) and “That Old Black Hole.”
Dr Dog is one of those bands that puts out great records, but their live show is something that must be witnessed. They continue their shows with Shakey Graves. Find dates here. All photos copyright and courtesy of David LaMason.
