Last year, I had the pleasure of photographing Walk off the Earth at the Fillmore Silver Spring. I was delighted to catch them again this past Wednesday! Although the band is missing a key player, Mike Taylor (aka “Beard Guy”) who passed away a few months ago, the remaining members have carried on and delivered their usual energetic performance.
A few minutes before 9pm, the house lights when out. The audience prepared for the band to take the stage. However, instead of making their immediate appearance, they projected an interactive “live feed” video . This “live feed” transitioned to a comical skit reminiscent of the movie, Baby Driver. During the skit, band members raced to the Fillmore just in time to take the stage. Then, the video transitioned to “real time” as the band jumped right into their first song, “Fire in my Soul”. This song exploded into a non-stop set that covered over an hour of originals and covers.
During the second song, “Fifth Avenue”, confetti exploded onto a crowd full of smiling faces with hands in the air. There is one thing that that is certain about Walk Off the Earth: their shows will immediately transform your mood into a positive one. Their charisma and enthusiasm on stage is truly contagious.
They performed amazing covers of “Hey Ya”, “Teenage Dirtbag”, and a truly creative “Table Melody” consisting of “Somebody That I Used to Know”, “Stand by Me”, “Come on Eileen”, “Wouldn’t It Be Nice”, “Shape of You”, “No Scrubs”, “No Diggity”, “Closer”, “Royals”, and “Hello”. Then, midway through their set, they displayed yet another video to entertain the crowd then continued with a few originals including a song that they recently wrote for their late band member, Mike Taylor. They also treated fans to “Bohemian Rhapsody” before closing out their main set.
If you have not had the chance to see Walk Off the Earth perform live, you are missing out. They are talented musicians, creative performers, and artists who truly love music! They will be performing in Philadelphia this Saturday June 1st at The Fillmore! Pick up your tickets here and go see this show!
