Snoop Dogg stopped by The Fillmore Silver Spring this past Sunday night, and I am ashamed to admit that this was my first rap concert. I have been listening to rap since Run DMC broke out with Raisin Hell. This genre has always held a place in my life… from A Tribe Called Quest to NWA and Public Enemy. In all honesty, it was how I became aware of other cultures. I remember in 1993 I heard a song in my friend’s car, called “Gin and Juice”. I was done, that had me. However, despite years of listening to this genre, this was my first rap concert.
When Snoop Dogg strolled onto the stage at The Fillmore, it was clear to see that he demands respect; but at the same time, he knows he is there to make you move. Along with his cousin Warren G, who opened the night, my night was epic. He performed every song you’d want to hear, going from “Nothing but a G Thing” to “Dre Day” to songs from the new album, I Wanna Thank Me.
At the end of the night I realized one thing: I have been to a lot of shows, from country to heavy metal to rock and roll. However, this was the most diverse crowd I have ever seen, and it was the best! Everyone was there to have a good time and hear great music. It was a sign that we can all come together and be as one. Thank you Snoop!
