I will never pass up an opportunity to see Interpol live. I have been listening to this band since they released their second album, released in 2002, Antics. It was that year that The Cure set out on their Curiosa Tour and included Interpol on the lineup. I recall sitting on the lawn at Merriweather Post Pavilion and thinking, “I love these guys. They’re like an upbeat version of Joy Division”. I picked up Antics and their first album, Turn On the Bright Lights, and have been listening to them ever since.
Now, for the second time this year, I was able to see Interpol perform They performed earlier this year at The Anthem and, just like this most recent show at Merriweather, they delivered a performance that gave me chills. (You can read the review and see photos from that show, here).
Although Interpol is opening for Morrissey on his fall tour, they performed a solid set. They made sure to perform fan favorites such as “C’mere”, “Evil”, and “Slow Hands”. Interpol has really figured out how to transport the audience to another world with their incredible lights display; especially during the song “NYC” when the lights literally explode and surround the audience while lead singer Paul Julian Banks sings “turn on the bright lights”.
Some highlights of their performance include opening with “Untitled” from their first album, a song that the band has only recently brought back into their set lists. They also included the lesser performed song “Stay in Touch”, from their most recent album, Marauder.
My night was truly made complete by seeing Interpol perform and I am already looking forward to seeing them again, hopefully soon! Please enjoy these few videos and photos that I took at their performance on September 5th at Merriweather Post Pavilion.
